Suck -- A**Hole of the Month!
Finding an example of an administration official that “sucks”
more than others isn’t an easy task. Bush, his cabinet
and their aides have committed a lot of sins both large and
small. However, for our premier evaluation of Jerk of the
Month we have nominated three outstanding candidates.
NOMINATIONS: Should we pick Attorney General
John Ashcroft who has been criss-crossing the country trying
to sell Patriot II (www.publicintegrity.org)?
He’s been addressing law enforcement groups while refusing
to allow any representatives of the print media (only TV and
some radio broadcasters) into his press conferences. Donna
Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties
Union, charged that the tour was nothing but a "stealth
road show." Should we pick Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary
of Defense, who ignored numerous CIA and Pentagon reports
that invading Iraq was a bad idea and now claims, despite
all evidence to the contrary, that the occupation of Iraq
is going great? How about Karl Rove, a Bush senior advisor.
Rove has been accused of “outing” a deep cover
CIA operative named Valerie Plame, the wife of Joseph Wilson
(a felony under the Intelligence Identifies Protection Act
of 1982). Wilson is a high-level diplomat who had been sent
to investigate assertions that Iraq had purchased uranium
from Niger. Wilson angered Bush & Co by telling reporters
that he believed these allegations were false. On July 6,
2003, he wrote, "It was highly doubtful that any such
transaction had ever taken place." Since Bush used this
story of an Iraq uranium purchase in his State of the Union
address as a justification for going to war, the administration
was apparently furious about Wilson’s editorial. Wilson’s
wife is an expert on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and
her job had been to spy on groups that might sell or buy such
weapons. Now that she has been exposed, her project has been
devastated, causing unimaginable damage to our intelligence
efforts. As for Rove, he dismisses the many allegations against
him, the most serious one from Joseph Wilson himself who said,
"At the end of the day, it's of keen interest to me to
see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frog-marched out of
the White House in handcuffs…..And trust me, when I
use that name, I measure my words." Despite outrage from
both the left and right, Rove did tell TV’s Hardball
host Chris Matthews that Wilson's wife was "fair game."
AND THE WINNER IS……How about
if you decide by writing and telling us who you think is JERK
OF THE MONTH?
